Del lat. salarium, de sal ‘sal’.
1. m. Paga o remuneración regular.
2. m. Cantidad de dinero con que se retribuye a los trabajadores por cuenta ajena.

Quinientos años antes de Cristo se construyó la vía Salaria, una calzada que iba desde las salinas de la ciudad de Ostia hasta Castrum Truentinum. Los soldados que cuidaban de la vía recibían parte de la paga en sal. A ésta la llamaron Salarium Argentum, es decir, dinero de sal. En Grecia, el intercambio de sal por esclavos, dió origen a la expresión “no vale su sal”.

Desde el más mínimo hasta el más desorbitado de los salarios todos tienen algo que vender, ya sea trabajo, tiempo, vida o incluso el alma. Y todo por un puñado de sal.

Five hundred years before Christ was built the Via Salaria, a causeway that ran from the salt flats of the city of Ostia to Castrum Truentinum. Soldiers who took care of the road received part of the salary. This one was called Salarium Argentum, that is, salt money. In Greece, the exchange of salt for slaves, gave rise to the expression “not worth its salt”.

From the least to the most exorbitant of wages all have something to sell. It can be work, time, life or even soul. And all for a handful of salt.
